Photo #52: This picture is of a rare piece of Pennsylvania Railroad rolling stock equipment photographed when it was new!
PRR Tank Car # 50000 was one of two built (the other, #50001) for PRR in 1965 and in the PRR paint scheme. Built as a six-axle (something new at that time), the tank car became know as the "Rail Whale" with a capacity of 38,000 gallons.
The 50000 is a class TMI, a non-pressurized car (corn syrup, chemicals, etc).
The 50001 is a class TPI, a pressurized car (LP Gas).
My information source says the Railroad Museum Of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, PA has the 50001, but we didn't see it there on our recent PRRH bus trip.
Photo was taken in North Philadelphia in 1965 from a locomotive cab by Engineer Hutchinson. - Rick
