Photo #62: This is a photo depicting the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western RR's engine house and turntable in Phillipsburg, NJ.
The engine house was located at Stockton Street Yard.
Unsure of the location of this photo at first, Jim Mack was sure it was a Lackawanna steam locomotive and the photograph was given to PRRH member, John Willever, who is very knowledgeable and resourceful on the DL&W. - Rick
John researched the photo and concluded the following:
1. Photo was taken between Sept. 8, 1935 and June 15, 1941.
2. Engine is sitting on track leading to former five-stall roundhouse that was demolished in late 1935 - early 1936.
3. Locomotive is DL&W 4-6-2, probably #1140.
4. Passenger service on the Washington to Phillipsburg (Washington Secondary) ceased on June 15, 1941.
5. Roof of Eagle Hotel (Mansard roof) is at top extreme left of photo.
6. The turntable is 80' and built by American Bridge Co.
It was quite impressive on how John determined this. He compared this photo to some of his photos and used DL&W employee handbooks that dated back to the 1920s through early 40s, which he bought with him to show us Sunday at the PRRH Museum.
But the key factor that proved the photo was taken at Phillipsburg, was the roof of the Eagle Hotel which is still standing today at the corner of Chambers and Stockton Streets. - John
