PRRH Lehigh Valley 62
Photo #62: In the years 1921 to 1924 the Lehigh Valley Railroad upgraded a good number of older locomotives. The tunnel and a number of bridges across New Jersey could not take the newer engines. To make the older engines last, the work was done so the newer engines could go to Oak Island. In 1928 the new tunnel opened and the newer engines ran to Oak Island. Not only did the older engines start to be scrapped but also the South Easton shop was cut back as the place the older engines got serviced. Here is a photo of the 1656 at ALCO Brooks works after getting a new boiler and other work.
