PRRH Lehigh Valley 63
Photo #63: The “Consolidation” being the first 2-8-0 type steam locomotive and gave its name to that type making it an important locomotive. It started out to be the Lehigh and Mahanoy RR 14 but before the Baldwin Locomotive Works could build it, the Lehigh and Mahanoy RR became part of the Lehigh Valley RR in 1866. It was built as Lehigh Valley 63 with the name “Consolidation”, renumbered 617 in 1905, then renumbered to 623 to make room for Delaware, Susquehanna & Schuylkill RR locomotives. On June 30, 1917 it ran 13,400 miles from last general repairs and was out of service awaiting disposition. Then in November 1917, it was used to build the 1146. We see the “Consolidation” in this 1888 photo.
