NS GP49 4604

NS GP49 4604. The prime feature of this locomotive is that Southern Railways in 1980, received GP38X locomotives 4600-4605, prototypes of a higher-horsepower intermediate model (a 12-cylinder edition of the GP50). After these 6 units were tested, the model went into EMD's catalog as the GP49, rated at 2800 hp rather than the 2600 hp of the first 6 units. Only Alaska Railroad bought the GP49 (9 units). The 4600-4605 were GP39X but NS and EMD has since designated them GP49s rated at 2800 hp. Photo by Rick Glosser
